Hugh Fitzgerald
Oh, he's there. It's just that you and I, and other mere mortals, can't see him. Present partout, visible nulle part. A regular deus absconditus or abscondidus, depending on your dentation or indentation. Not a piece on the board will make a move without being keenly aware of where he stands. He's very much there, and most concerned. Whatever else may be said of him, the Christian God is no deadbeat dad. And you can take that to the bank.

Empty Spirits & Emptying Gin Lane
Imagine my shock and awe (it's easy if you try) upon seeing that RB and HF had (here deigning to drop the dental fricative as did Ingmar Johansson with his "fist of toonder and lightning") stolen my thunder by putting up posts moments before mine was approved. "Great minds" an' all that, but I'm really thor about it; just loki, I guess.
I'll try to keep abreast of the NER ebb and flow and flotsam by posting below some Aussie-related "art" found while searching for clips showing James Tiberius Kirk, like Enoch Powell or "the Roman" foaming at "Khan", the former prime passenger of the spaceship, Botany Bay.

Or: Globish & Gobish
There are none so blind as those who will not see and even Hugh has said in his heart, "There is a Gob"*, but in the land of the blind, as might be said by, I think, JMJ, kinky Odin, or a kinky Ladd, is King.

Now I suggest you do two things, and think about a third.
Read 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', the chapter entitled 'Through the Trapdoor ', paying particular attention to the chess game sequence; then read the following chapter, 'The Man With Two Faces';
then watch the brilliant transmogrification of the chess game scene, in the film of the same name - it is one of the most powerful things in the film. Think of Ron - 'I'll be a knight'; think of which role Harry plays in the game, and then what Hermione says to Harry, at the end of the game.
And then allow yourself to think about the multiple terrible unintended ironies and the weight of meaning that develops, in this scene, and that which follows (the confrontation with Voldemort) from this simple fact: Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, is Jewish. (Irish father; Jewish mother).
