Lovely article - the mention of kiddy tv shows brought back so many memories!
My eldest son was born in 1990 and my eldest daughter in 1993; in 1995 we acquired our very first family television (up till then we had survived without one), and pretty soon the Teletubbies - and Postman Pat - and Thomas the Tank Engine - were being avidly watched, by the two eldest children and then by the two younger ones upon their joining the family and growing big enough to watch TV. I can still remember the Postman Pat theme song; and we even made a 'Postman Pat' birthday cake - that is, a cake made and iced to look like his van, and two marzipan figures crafted by me and painted with food colouring, to represent Pat and his cat.
Quite agree with your reading of the original series and its depiction of a resourceful little country community. There are places like that in Australia, still, also.
