Change. Unqualified "change" is what an economy cannot abide, whatever its political objective. When business is unable to effectively anticipate future trends, nor successfully navigate current conditions it will contract and hold back, waiting for a more stable, predictable environment. The new dirty word "profit" is necessary or business collapses, and with it societies. One can only confiscate the people's money (individuals and businesses) so long before there is nothing left, and no inventive, enthusiastic entrepreneurs to fill the voids. Enter the big business-government liaison, and its attendant corruption, the only way to minimize change and produce, albeit inefficiently and with little regard for society's needs or desires. This followed by the ossification of the economy, though appearances may be kept, it is but a shell, a hollow and fragile shell.
So, our society may become less left-right, culturally segregated or morally this or that, but only for that which will prevent us from disintegrating economically and evaporating politically. Is this a direct consequence of 40 years (140 years?) of the left’s influence on our educational system, where political objectives trump intellectual rigor? The Utopians inevitably become the Tyrants. Are these chickens coming home to roost?
