Arab Spring and Future Scenarios Bookmark and Share

The Arab Spring

It may be correct to assume that the masses in the Middle East have a very short memory, or they are not willing to learn from non-Arab experiences. At this point I am referring to the Iranian Islamic Revolution of the 1970’s. Any re-evaluation of the Iranian Revolution, after over three decades, indicates clearly that it failed to fulfill its basic promise of a better life to the Iranian people, and that Islam has turned out not to be the promised solution, as the Revolution once claimed. These days, the Iranian economy suffers greatly from stagnation, unemployment, poverty, and widespread corruption. more>>>

My memories of that time include seeing grafitti at Indiana University, "Down with the Shah". Students have an uncanny ability to seize the sanctimonious, self-flattering side of any controversy and they always espouse high-minded but shallow and stupid causes.

I remember asking one Iranian student whether things were really that bad in iran, and she answered "Yes," but without any elaboration. Arab students I have talked to rarely seemed to feel any need to justify their various positions, including their venomous hatred of Israel. (They were always in the Union building, passing out vile propaganda.)

I know the Shah's secret police did horrible things to some people, but I think the main objections Iranians had to him was that he was trying to modernize and wasn't a fanatical Muslim.

Yes Larry, that was the situation over 30 years ago. It is very easy to fool the masses, and to mobilize them for political ends.

Now the Iranian people regret the day they went out against the Shah.

I read your comment but could not understand what you are trying to arrive at. Can you be more specific? The Paper deals with many issues of the Middle East, so can you name the issues that interest you?

Samir Yousif
