Young British Muslims think Isis fighters returning from Syria should be reintegrated into society, research finds

From the Far left leaning Independent

Young British Muslims think Isis fighters returning from Syria should be reintegrated into society and rehabilitated rather than being sent to prison, a study suggests.

The national study found young British Muslims across the UK believe returnee fighters should be reintegrated into society, with one saying the Government should “give them a chance” and another warning that “otherwise they are gonna find another extremist group and join them”.

Dr Imran Awan, Associate Professor of Criminology at Birmingham City University, told The Independent he was surprised so many were pro-rehabilitation, “because many young Muslim voices are never heard within the discourse on terrorism”.

Dr Awan interviewed with 25 male and 25 female British Muslims, aged between 14 and 25, from areas of the UK where there is a record of people travelling to Syria and joining Isis, to collect their views on why they think young Muslims travel to fight for jihadi groups, and what they think should happen when they return.

One interviewee warned: “When people feel isolated and angry because they are not being treated with respect and if they go out and fight and Syria and when they come back there is no help, then I promise you, you will see more terrorism because these young people will think why should I do anything when my own Government don’t care about me.”

The Independent's editorial stance is very left-wing, often somewhat to the left of the notorious Guardian newspaper. The readship, happily, is more practical. Dr Awan interviewed 50 young Musims from 'sensitive' areas. More than 50 Independent readers have made comments like these most commended:-

Martiansunite : They need to stand trial if they have been involved in terrorism and murder. Welcome them back with a welfare package - really? I don't want them back at all and no idea why they'd want to come back to a country that is totally against their evil message and way of living.

M B: Or we could prosecute them for war crimes like they deserve.

Pabloid; That attitude is predictable and obvious. What they mean is that they should be allowed to form strong networks and be ready to strike when unanticipated.

Dog Tag: they should not be allowed into our country - they are murderers and rapists - personally I would applaud if they were strung up on the nearest lamppost as soon as they set foot in the UK.

stevencarrwork; What is obvious is that not one of the Muslims surveyed thought ISIS had nothing to do with Islam. They all thought it had attractions to some Muslims.

Avoided Cranium: They are enemies of the state and its citizens. These traitors made a choice - they should be executed.

John Amir: They should not be coming back. They are a threat to the general population and as such have in my opinion forfeited the right to reside in the UK

AdriansWall: I don't know if I'm more worried about those coming back from Syria, or those answering this questionnaire!

James: Nope, they will only blame the western society for the fact we didn't try hard enough to integrate them.
Best solution is to keep them out, if any come back lock them up for their crimes and throw away the key. Pity we dont have death penalty for these traitorous scums.
