I wrote earlier this month of the service to mark the 90th Anniversary of the Great War Armistice. The commemoration took place at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 90 years after the guns of the Great War fell silent. There is a small ray of light left after all in Formerly Great Britain.

These are not just the last voices of a generation, they are the last voices of a country and a culture;  a culture that men like Peel and Disraeli and Churchill  built and preserved, a country that men like Kitchener and Nelson and Montgomery fought to protect.

Those lists go on and on, much like Mr Chipping's students, but the country seems to have fallen into a dark decline.
