This essay seems to replace reasonable criticism of academic truisms with wilfull naivete. Frank clearly sequenced and conceived _The Americans_ as a rebuke of the prevailing photo-essays most commonly associated with _Life_ and _Look_ -- look no further than his "Statement" in U. S. Camera Annual Report for supporting evidence. In turn, it's hard to argue that _The Americans_ doesn't offer a critique - even if oblique - of the American Way of Life promulgated in such photoessays.
