Rex Quondam, Rexque Futurus

Question:

"What link can you make between Al Bowlly and the Ayatollah Khomeini?" was a question posted atNER several hours ago.

Answer:

On April 17, 1941 Al Bowlly sang at the Rex Cinema in High Wycombe. He returned to London that night, and later that night, a German parachute bomb exploded on Jermyn Street, killing Bowlly in his bed.

Twenty-seven years later, in Abadan, Iran, four fanatical Shi'a Muslims -- supporters of the fanatical Muslim Ayatollah Khomeini -- locked the doors of the Rex Cinema (or, as it was known in Iran, Cinema Rex) and set it afire. They wanted to commit a monstrous act that might be blamed on the Shah and his men. Besides, it was a good  target for them anyway. As fanatical Muslims, they regarded movies as haram, ,and their film criticism was not of the Cahiers-du-Cinema type. More than 400 people inside the Cinema Rex burned to death. You can read more about the atrocity-- which Khomeini's followers tried first to blame on the Shah's men, and later, when they came to power, arranged for an innnocent army officer, Monir Taheri, to be executed  for the crime  --  here.

That is what connects Al Bowlly and Ayatollah Khomeini - rex quondam rexque futurus.

"Other Than That, Mrs. Lincoln...."

Cineplex quondam Cineplexque futurus and all that.  When asked why I had added the groin protector which later enabled members of the SWAT team to immediately detect that I was not one of them, I replied, "It's alimentary."

"Quick, children, let us get out of here into the sober night, into the shuffling peace of familiar sidewalks, into the solid world of good freckled boys and the spirit of comradeship. Welcome reality!"
