An Ideological War on Two Fronts

by Rebecca Bynum (July 2010)

The following is the speech Ms. Bynum delivered to the 2010 New English Review Symposium, Decline, Fall & Islam on June 19th, 2010.

Last year I spoke to the issue of whether Islam should be classified as a religion or given a separate category of its own. I concluded that because Islam does not function in society in the way we expect religion to function, that it should not be classed along with the other religions of the world. It is like the duck-billed platypus of belief systems and because Islam is so unique it deserves its own category – some Latin word combining politics and religion perhaps. more>>>

Would it be going too far to suggest an irreligious faith in transcendent value? Because I agree with much of what you say. Aside from the necessity of belief in God as a benign sentient intelligence who is interested in each of us personally, of course..

I don't know, I think religion in its broadest sense could be defined as the pursuit of value. This is partly why I don't think Islam qualifies. Islam itself is the highest value as defined by Islam. Islam then becomes a substitute God - it is Islam that is revered and worshipped through obedience - a closed system.

When a person like you talks about Islam, we need to listen,  Unfortunately, we cannot listen because the god of Moses did not choose a woman to deliver His Ten Commandments, and did not send His daughter to die on the cross for our sins.

Its easy to have a gender change operation.  Its true you won't be one 100% man, but it will be close enough.
