Libert, galit, Boulangerie
by Nidra Poller (August 2010)

Le grand prix de la baguette de tradition française de la ville de Paris was awarded on March 27th to Michel Galloyer, proprietor of Le Grenier à Pain, a network of 25 boulangeries in France, soon to be extended to Japan in partnership with Nihon Gastronomie Kenkyujo. The Grenier à Pain, which will be purveyor of baguettes to the presidential palace for one year, is in fact made up of small local bakeries, and the winning baguette was crafted in the Montmartre shop by Djibril Bodian a master baker of Senegalese origin. “La baguette tradition” is a richer, tastier, heartier, more elastic version of the ordinary baguette, which ranges from horrible to middling. La tradition, as its name indicates, is good old fashioned genuine bread. And whatever you say for or against France, you’ve got to admit that our bread is phenomenal.  more>>>

In the early 80's, I remember sitting on steps in front of the Sacre Coeur in Montmatre on a beautiful warm spring night about 1am with the (then) love of my life. We had a bottle of red wine, and some cheese and fresh bread that we had bought earlier in the evening and were enjoying the lights of Paris while listening to a fellow playing classical guitar tunes farther down the steps.  This article brought back wonderful memories of a romantic evening.  I can almost smell the bread and taste the wine today.  Thank you for a wonderful article.

I have wept after reading poweful articles about great wrongs such as the Holocuast but Nidra's article is the first to make my mouth water,

One of my favorite films is "Sahara" with Humphrey Bogart. A small band of Allied soldiers is trapped at a desert well and reminisce about what they will do when they get home. A Free French soldier simply yearns for a little bread, wine and onion (a wish that is hearily seconded by an imprisoned Italian soldier)..
