Johnny Horton: The Battle of New Orleans

The second War of Independence was the War of 1812, which also gave us our national anthem. This song is about the Battle of New Orleans, where General Andrew Jackson defeated the British in 1814. It is set to a traditional tune called the "Eighth Day of January."

I love this tune and the words and Johnny Horton's version, but I prefer - for sentimental reasons -  Lonnie Donnegan's, which  reached No. 2 in the UK Hit Parade in 1959.

The BBC would only allow it to be broadcast if the mild expletives "bloody" (fought the bloody British in the town of New Orleans...) and "hell"  (we really gave them hell...)were  replaced with the euphemisms "bloomin'..."   and "...well" Notice how Donnegan raises his eyebrows when he sings "bloomin'".
