A Blast from the Past, and a Classic, that Does not Date, Re-Posted: J B Kelly on (Muslim) Arabs, Oil, and the Gulf

In a magazine named ‘Encounter’, 38 years ago (1979; just after the fall of the Shah and the creation, under Khomeini, of the Islamic Republic of Iran) there appeared a ruthlessly lucid article by the erudite J B Kelly, entitled “Of Valuable Oil and Worthless Policies”.

Its insights are even more useful and necessary today, given what is now playing out between the House of Saud, and the House of Al-Thani, and the Ayatollahs and Mullahs of Iran, and their various proxies, frenemies, and alliances of convenience, than at the time when it was first written.

So here it is, in hopes that it might be shared far and wide, and perhaps even brought to the atteniton of the current President of the United States, assuming that that has not yet happened.

If you have never read it, you are as of this moment politely urged to click on the link, and read. It will be a pleasure, and an education.

And then, having read: copy.   And circulate, to anyone you think might find it helpful.
