A Letter to Our Readers and Contributors

by Rebecca Bynum

As we come to the end of our eleventh year, I will be taking some time away from the arduous task of editing and laying out the monthly magazine. As many of you know, back in March of this year I began working with Dr. Walid Phares, who was appointed as foreign policy advisor to then Candidate Trump. At that time, I suspended my work in book publishing and then, to our great surprise and immense relief, Donald Trump won the election.  It is expected that Dr. Phares will have a place within the new administration and he has asked me to continue in my service to him there and this I am very pleased and proud to accept.

Even while looking forward to serving our new administration, where there will be a chance for fresh thinking and new policies, I cannot help but feel a bit wistful looking back over these past eleven years in which so much of my world was wrapped up in New English Review. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life to work with so many of the leading writers of our time, men and women who have trusted me with their work. New English Review has always been a team effort and has always been more than the sum of its parts. In our small corner of the internet, complex philosophical pieces have stood beside timely political analysis, literary and cultural criticism, book reviews, fiction, poetry and humor. We didn’t simply curse the decline of culture, we created culture. We didn’t simply curse the political direction of our nation, we helped to change it. And now it is time for me to do my small part in cementing that new direction by serving our new President.

We are working to bring in a new managing editor and I will remain as publisher and advisor. Our blog, The Iconoclast, will continue as usual and will not be affected. We will post updates on any new developments here.

Thank you to all our many contributors and readers who have made New English Review the well-respected publishing enterprise it has become.

Bless you all and here’s to an exciting new year!

  1. Come to your senses, woman!  Demonbreun Street for Pennsylvania Avenue? NER Managing Editor for a government job? Not even a lateral move. More like a demotion. If it must be done from a call to duty then please reside in Loudoun County as it would increase the area's average iq by 3.27%.

  2. how wonderful to hear that you shall now be advising on issues that you have written about so brilliantly. I have come to treasure NER and greatly admire and respect your work. We have been in despair for so long because our leaders just have not understood the issues we face. That you are on board is cause to be optimistic, that maybe the tide may turn at last. Good luck and thank you so much Rebecca.

  3. I am sure all readers of NER greatly appreciate your energetic and creative efforts to present such an astounding range of thought. I hope you return to NER once your service to our nation is done. Best wishes for a fulfilling & healthy 2017!

  4. Congratulations, Rebecca! What a wonderful and exciting opportunity! I trust you to make the most of it!

After such a long and dispiriting time, it's really encouraging that you and Mr. Phares will be informing policy. I hope you get the chance to introduce Ibn Warraq, Ayan Hirsi Ali, Wafa Sultan, Nonie Darwish, and other clear thinkers to WH staff.

After considerable study, I realized that Islam is really just the vehicle for Arab racism, decorated as a religion. Its sole purpose is to make the world safe for Arab men. The irony of its protection by the left is that Islam is inherently imperialist and colonialist. It sacralizes exactly the failings progressives purport to oppose. Maybe that would be something to communicate to the public.

Shia Islam, by the way, developed as the instrument of Persian national self-preservation in the face of Late Antiquity Arabist-Islamic triumphalism. This is why the Sunni/Shia schism is so bitter and so long-lasting — it's a race war.

  5. Congratulations, Rebecca. As a long time reader, I wish you well in your well-deserved new endeavors. I'm sure you will find an excellent replacement and that you are maintaining your relationship as publisher. It was my good fortune to be able to attend the 2009 symposium in Nashville where I was able to meet you and several NER contributors. It was a memorable weekend and I thank you for it.  I still have many of the presentations on my computer, including yours (Islam as Religion) which I believe contained points that were later used in your book, "The Real Nature of Religion."

It's great to know that we are going to have people in DC who actually know about the enemy we face and aren't afraid to say so.  Best of luck and if you ever get to Atlanta, look me up. Dinner is on me.

  6. Thank you everyone. Yes indeed, we will try to bring in the expertise of many of our clear-eyed friends when it comes to Islam and other geo-political threats. We have before us a gigantic effort, but we will have a great team.

  7. Being a critique of contemporary culture is a bold philosophical enterprise, and you and your online magazine have made a trenchant contribution. Journalist critique of politics is an honourable tradition on the right, centre and left. But for a journalist to become an active part of policy formation in a major world powerhouse is a dramatic step into the establishment from the committed outside. Between the idea and the reality there lies the shadow. Wishing you well in transcending the shadow.

  8. Congratulations, Rebecca, on this new and well deserved appointment! We wish you all the best in bringing to the fore all the forward moving ideas and thoughts that you have been exposed to! May this step be one of many towards world peace and harmony!

  9. Your magazine has educated me and entertained me — and opened my eyes to woeful gaps in my understanding of the world.

It has changed who I am.

All with prose style to burn.  Best of luck to you and keep up the good fight.

  10. Between the idea and the reality there lies the shadow.

Oh yes, that's true and a sobering thought to be sure. Thank you all.

  11. Congratulations Rebecca. I haven't written anything for NER in a while, having been concentrating on out-and-out academic essays, but my fourteen NER pieces were important to me as I tried to deal with political tensions in my thinking. I can't support Mr Trump but I hope his administration surprises those of us who are pessimistic about it.  All the very best to you in this new role.

  13. Congratulations on an amazing job at NER, and much good fortune going forward, to you, Dr. Phares and our country.

  14. Rebecca, Congratulations on your new opportunity to share your knowledge and compassion, on educating Americans on the dangers of Islam to our future. Dr. Phares is fortunate to have crossed paths with you. Kaye and I wish you the best in your new venture to further serve our country.
