Sorry, Mr. Choudary, my freedom of expression can’t be circumscribed by your beliefs. You may speak for yourself, or for other like-minded Muslims, and limit your own speech and expression as much as you like – that’s your right in a liberal democracy. But the wide-ranging freedom of expression I enjoy has been hard-won by generations of my forebears. Not for nothing were their nightly bombing runs over Nazi Germany or the dangerous patrols in the North Sea.
Fascist attempts at telling us what we should be thinking, and how we should be expressing it, have already been defeated, Mr. Choudary. We have no intention of giving up our hard won freedoms, even if the Charlie Hebdo murders today show us that not all have yet learned that. Neither your taunting words, nor the bloodshed in Paris today, will weaken our resolve.
