Between the Columns
by Michael Shindler (November 2023)
Fireflies Over Water, Kei Nomiyama
Between the columns in the dark,
The landscape where youth finds its way,
The evocations of blue and purple and
The vernal green of stagnant nature,
–
We go chasing after something, a spark:
A light different than that of day,
Like fireflies over farmland
That only memories capture;
–
Past the columns, the colored maze,
The garden and the wasted days,
Past the life lived too late,
The figure looking back from the gate,
–
We go chasing.
