German Greatness
by Walt Garlington (December 2023)
Germany, Germany,
Your strength and glory
Do not lie in Reichs or Führers,
Nor in Iron Chancellors,
But rather in a monk-missionary
Raised in a monastery,
Blessed by Boniface,
And like him an apostle to your race.
This Sturmi, founder of Fulda,
The nuns Gunthild and Agatha,
The martyr Ursula –
All the holy saints of your land –
Will gird you about like an iron band
And snatch you from ev’ry evil hand.
They are your greatest boast,
This Ghost-filled host.
Embrace them, and a greater splendor you will know.
