In the Colony

by Susan Shea (December 2024)

The Ants (Salvador Dalí, 1936-37)

He felt like an ant
dodging the footfalls
of the biting mouths
who told him
he was small
just the end of a word
an ist
racist…misogynist…

who was not worthy
to be on their channels

but now it has been
declared that he is
man kind again
allowed to take care
of himself and his family
committed to teaching
the songs of freedom

tall enough to look directly
into the eyes of the overbearing
to say enough is enough

we are all invited
to the rally now and
deliverance is just beginning
