Looking Around

by Bradford Tuckfield (May 2024)

Starry Night —Matthew Wong, 2019

From the apartment on the sixteenth floor
I can look down and see kids playing. What’s more,
I can look up and see far stars in grand skies
but I’d rather close the curtains and look in your eyes.

In the canoe floating down the Mekong;
behind, the current pushing us along—
ahead, the branches part to show a future so bright.
But I’d rather stay put with you here, if I might.

Crooks and wastrels surround us today.
The whirl of time steals the present away.
Change and decay in all I see.
So let’s keep just one constant: you and me.
