by Walt Garlington (September 2023)
The Deluge, J.M.W. Turner, 1805
Orbs of illumination
In Germany and Britain,
Sol and Lucius,
Holy saints,
You made the West
A House of Light
By proclaiming
The Gospel of Christ.
–
Now we have cast
A shade upon it
By our pride
And other sins,
And blocked its beams
From shining forth,
Filling the rooms
With darkness,
Nightmarish acts,
And vampiric spirits.
–
Light again for us
The lamps of Grace,
And bid the evil geists
Be gone, that the home
Of Western kindred
May be full, once more,
Of brotherhood, warmth, and mirth
