The Portal

by David Solway (February 2024)

Lovers with Cat, Oskar Kokoschka, 1917

for Janice

When first I met her
I fell in love with her words,
which were the carrier of her spirit.
Then I fell in love with her voice,
which was the carrier of her words.
Now I love her very breath
from which voice, words, spirit
spring into existence
like hierarchies of angels.
This is the truth
I have learned to cherish
like a portal of gold.

When one says I love you,
God enters into language.
