There Goes

by Michael Shindler (February 2024)

The Lac d’Annecy, Paul Cezanne, 1896

There goes the last boat.
There goes the last star.

There go the women
Over the wave,
Afloat and afar.

Another sea, another ocean.
A new sign, an emotion.

But we are bidden
To be brave:

To chase the last boat,
The last star.
