Who Will Silence the Lord?

by Walt Garlington (April 2025)

Satan Before the Lord (Corrado Giaquinto, 1750)

‘The heavens declare the Glory of God’ —
_________And the devil hates the words they speak.
‘The earth is the Lord’s and the fulness thereof’ —
_________But the demons want it for themselves.

No generation is safe from the scheming
_________Of the evil ones to silence You,
To expel You from Your own creation—
_________First by nailing You upon the Tree,

Then burying Your life-creating Cross
_________And death-destroying grave underneath
A temple of a heathen goddess.
_________They cut out the tongues of your confessors,
And break the icons bearing Your Precious Face.
_________The relics of Your saints they burn,

The verdant surface of the earth they deface
_________With the grey ugliness of cities
That obscure Your beauty, and with machines
_________That prod us on toward sin and death.

But the Lord, the Mighty Lord, will never
_________Be vanquished! Crucify Him, and He
Resurrects. Bury His Cross, and It appears
_________In the sky. Remove a Christian’s tongue,

And he will speak miraculously withal.
_________Destroy the saints’ relics and a sweet
Fragrance, a pillar of fire, or an awful
_________Storm will present themselves to the senses.

Though the earth and man be marred a thousand times
_________In a thousand ways, they will be restored
By His transforming power radiating
_________From His Church—the angels’ Liturgy,

The prayers and touch of holy women
_________And holy men, regeneration
In the waters of baptism, oneness
_________With Christ, deification, by eating

Of the Flesh and Blood of His ascended Body.
_________And one bright day this war will cease,
Evil be swept away, the reign of God
_________Will be with man on earth forever,
And the lustrous Light of His Countenance
_________Will shine from within all created things.

Come, Lord Jesus. Hallelujah, amen!
