Berlin Holocaust Memorial – perpertrator is Syrian asylum seeker named Wassim al M

A paraphrase from the German language report in Bild newspaper this morning.

Readers will remember that last night Berlin police were seeking a man who stabbed a Spanish tourist in the neck at the Holocaust memorial near the US embassy. The man arrested by police after a manhunt is confirmed by the Prosecutor’s Office to be Wassim al M., a 19-year-old refugee and asylum seeker from Syria.

Police arrested after the crime with blood on his hands and the blood-smeared murder knife stil in his possession. . According to BILD’s  information, the investigators are assumeing that this was a “politically motivated crime”.

The refugee centre in Leipzig where he was living is currently being searched by the police.

The victim is stable in hospital after an emergency operation.  The assailant will appear before a magistrate later today.
