From a Cumbria Police news release and the BBC.
Remember Cumbrian Police denied that any organised ‘Asian’ gang was operating in the county to rape and coerce girls into sex slavery. I suppose three brothers can be defined as a family not a ‘gang’? I have been keeping an eye on this case for nearly 5 years.
Three brothers who abused girls as young as six have been jailed.
They had denied a total of 62 offences, dating between 1996 and 2012 and carried out in Barrow and Leeds, but were convicted following a trial at Preston Crown Court in October.
Shaha Joman Miah, 38, was given a life sentence (minimum term of 21 years and 232 days) after being found guilty of eight counts of indecent assault, four counts of indecency with a child, five counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, nine counts of rape of a child, six counts of sexual assault of a child and five counts of sexual activity with a child.
Shaha Amran Miah, 49, was given a life sentence (minimum term of 20 years and 338 days) after being found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault, seven counts of indecency with a child, two counts of intimidation, rape of child, kidnapping and sexual assault
Shaha Alman Miah, 47, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and four years on extended license after being found guilty of three counts of sexual activity with a child.
The court heard that the victims were groomed and given gifts, alcohol and cigarettes, and were threatened with physical violence if they told anyone what was happening to them.
Judge Unsworth said the men were “very high risk” and had taken away the childhood of their victims.
“I am satisfied each of you acted in a predatory and paedophilic manner. You saw your victims as vehicles to be used and abused at will, you treated them with utter contempt”, he said.
During the trial prosecutors characterised the brothers as “Team Miah”, putting family loyalty before the truth, each backing their brothers’ denials and trying to discredit witnesses.
Passing sentence, Judge Unsworth added: “You were each aware at different times of each other’s sexual proclivities and conduct. The bonds that tie you three together are strong and it would appear, unbreakable.”
Detective Chief Inspector John Graham-Cumming said: “This has been a long and complex investigation which has involved Cumbria Constabulary working with partners, including officers in other areas of the country, to bring these men to justice for the crimes they committed. The defendants preyed on young girls and also used threats of violence to warn them off reporting what was occurring to the authorities. . . ”
Since conviction Shaha Joman Miah has admitted another 40 offences against girls according to local newspaper the North West Mail
The court heard Joman Miah, also known as ‘Saj’, admitted everything post-conviction. With his confession, Joman Miah conceded he had been in a sexual relationship with a girl aged between 13 to 16 where he groomed her by lavishing her with gifts and money. He further admitted to sexually assaulting her daily.
The court heard Joman Miah had five previous convictions for eight offences, Amran Miah had eight convictions for 21 offences and Alman Miah had two previous convictions for five offences.
Joman Miah allegedly said ‘in his religion a girl could marry an adult male from the age of nine.’
