Centenary of the Battle of Jutland ~ 31st May 1916

Two men spring to my mind during this weeks commemorations of the centenary of the Battle of Jutland. They are Boy First Class John Travers Cornwell VC, and the last survivor of the battle Henry Allingham who died in 2009 aged 113. They both attended the same school in East London, which I mentioned here.  I wrote about Henry Allingham here, and about Jack Cornwell here. You can follow the links. His grave in Manor Park cemetery.

His medals were held in the Imperial War Museum, given by his sister some years after the death of their mother. There is a memorial to all the men who died on HMS Chester in Chester Cathedral and his medal, his scout badge and other items are now kept there. It’s not his home turf, but it isn’t unfitting either.
