Charities bully on doorstep for ‘terrorist funds’

This is from the Sunday Times. When I get a link to the report I’ll update this.

…a report published by the Henry Jackson Society (HJS) … warned … that unregistered Islamic charities are running rampant. They are operating in areas such as Bradford, Birmingham, Manchester, Yorkshire, Luton and Tower Hamlets — a London borough with Britain’s highest proportion of Muslims.

Problems associated with “bogus charity collectors” have become so extensive in Bradford that the West Yorkshire police force has been forced to warn Muslim communities and schools about “safe giving”.

According to a police officer involved young Muslim men and their mothers who are at home all day are fed up with collectors knocking at the door ‘week in – week out’. Part of me wonders why they are not out at school or at work.

The Sunday Times understands that police in West Yorkshire suspect some of the money raised by the unregistered groups may have funded terrorist organisations such as Hamas in Gaza and Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistani network behind the Mumbai attacks in 2008 which killed 166 people.

… that illegal Islamic charities were using “emotional rhetoric” and were being “forceful and intimidatory to people, particularly women in cars [at traffic lights], so people feel obliged to give something …They say [to prospective donors], ‘You should give and if you don’t give then you’re not supporting the Muslim community.’ So they are quite forceful in most instances. ..”

Apparently West Yorkshire Police do not have the resources to crack down on ‘unregistered’ charities.
