by Phyllis Chesler
I’ve been blessed by many, many things—we all have—but what I have in mind today is the blessing of music, both secular and sacred. Who has not been moved as they listened to the late Callas, Caballe, or Tebaldi bring to life one of opera’s most beloved heroines and with such peerless mastery. However, today is the day that Jews prepare to enter the holy Sabbath. I have been privileged to hear and to meet Rahel Jaskow who lives in Jerusalem and who sings sacred music—oh, with such sweetness, purity, and soul. She once served as the “Chazanit” for the Original Women of the Wall. Here is one of her prayers in her album “Day of Rest” which may be purchased online. Enjoy!
