Happy DJT Day

Monday marks a new kind of holiday. By Glenn Harlan Reynolds

I heard a woman at my gym say she’ll be celebrating the national holiday on Monday. “MLK Day?” someone asked. “Nope,” was the reply. “DJT Day!”

Both MLK and DJT have some things in common: Mocked for skin color (MLK: Black; DJT: Orange). Targeted by the FBI with dirty tricks aimed at getting them out of the national spotlight. Also targeted by “lone gunman” assassins, with DJT just being an inch or two luckier. And both ushered in sea changes in attitudes that might not have happened without them.

Donald Trump isn’t even president yet and we’re seeing all sorts of changes. Wikipedia is suddenly starting to police its biased editors. The FBI has abolished its DEI office. States and universities are abolishing theirs. Illegal immigrants are already starting to self-deport. Transgender mania is receding.

It’s like a spell has broken around the world. As I’ve noted before, it’s a preference cascade. Through nonstop lying, gaslighting, and bullying, various left groups have for decades forced people to believe – or, more accurately, to pretend to believe – in all sorts of crazy stuff.

Now people have stopped pretending, and stopped any semblance of respect for the leftist cant.

We see this even in Britain, where criminal prosecutions are suddenly taking place over the “grooming” (that is, rape) gangs run by groups of mostly Pakistani men in various cities, and where the Establishment is oh-so-reluctantly acknowledging that this is a real phenomenon after years of pretending it was a racist fiction. They have no choice, as UK polls show huge supermajorities saying it’s a horrendous problem, and also saying that politicians who covered it up should be jailed.

Donald Trump isn’t doing all of this, but he’s the catalyst, along with Elon Musk’s (literally) world-changing acquisition of X, blowing apart the carefully built structure of lies and censorship that the global ruling class had put together to keep people living in a false world. And part of it is just that the lies had gotten too heavy to hold up. Layer after layer after layer of things you’re not supposed to say, or see, or even think. Even the normies have had enough.

But while the normies are over it, our ruling class is doubling down on fantasyland. Joe Biden today tweeted that he was declaring the Equal Rights Amendment ratified, in spite of the clearly established fact that it wasn’t.

Well, when I say “Joe Biden tweeted,” I mean “whichever nameless White House guy with a lanyard controls Biden’s social media accounts tweeted.”

Biden’s tweet falls into the “old man yells at cloud” category, and is properly being ignored.

Well, mostly ignored. Among the people taking it seriously are (checks notes) Harvard Law professors Laurence Tribe and Kathleen Sullivan, proving once again Orwell’s observation that there are some ideas so stupid that only intellectuals will believe them. But they’re being mocked too:

Well, the government and the ruling class and especially Joe Biden and large chunks of the Harvard Law faculty are jokes, and deserve to be mocked and dismissed.

It’s dangerous, of course, for a society to have top institutions that are jokes, and that are rightly mocked and dismissed.

But until recently we had top institutions that were jokes and that were nonetheless taken seriously. So this is progress.

Come DJT Day, I think we’ll see that progress start in earnest. Enjoy your weekend.

  1. The Advise & Consent hearings, seeings, and seerings confirm that DT, Donald Trump, purged some of the DTs, Delirium Tremens, from his psychotic myopic fellow Amercans.

  2. For the sharp-witted political pundits and wonks who slavishly kneel to others menial memes such as ‘Left’ and ‘Right’, I suggest ‘Wrong’ and ‘Correct’, as most meaning-full.
