As a new book shows, hatred of Jews can be infectious—and some of the worst carriers are Jews who defame their own people.

Missing in this interesting piece is perhaps the most obvious explanation, and one that fits all kinds of Jews, including the ultra-orthodox, a group that can hardly be accused of excessive social-climbing. It is that, after centuries of powerlessness, many Jews are repulsed by the inevitable moral hazards that accompany statehood. It may have been humiliating and lethal to have had no power, but the one advantage was that one could keep one’s hands clean; one could be a dead, but righteous victim rather than a live, but sullied victimizer. Just listen to the Jewish Left and they all sing the same song: Woe is me, Israel has been so mean using force, when none is needed, and therefore must be punished for her sins. It’s the ghetto mentality in modern form.
