More than a decade ago, he welcomed the ascension of Recip Tayyip Erdogan, the anti-Ataturk and a True Believer just like Gultekin himself. But as he saw what Erdogan did, what Fethulleh Gulen wanted to do, what all the Muslims-come-to-power did, he began to ask himself: if all these people who studied Islam for so long, knew the Qur’an and Sunnah perfectly, in power or with power became such dismal failures, what did that mean? And could Islam be reformed — the question asked both by those who are sincere, and by those who are insincere but who think it is exactly what they have to focus the attention of Infidels on — the possibliity of Islam “reforming itself for the 21st century” — so as to keep those Infidels from becoming too alarmed about Islam, essentially immutable, itself, and with that alarm, worry too about the carriers of Islam, those who call themselves Musliims.
Levent Gultekin dares to recognize that the question has to be asked: What has Islam done for the world in the last 1400 years? I think if he is quite sincere with himself, he will admit to the answer, and ultimately, have to leave Islam altogether. It’s being done. It can be done. You can even live to tell about it.
