Now Saddam Hussein’s hometown palace is bullet-ridden, likely to be razed, and even his tomb has been destroyed. His corpse has been spirited away by Sunni loyalists, and no doubt will appear somewhere else as an object of veneration and pilgrimage which, come to think of it, is one of the very things Sunnis object to about Shi’a. Look on his works — his works, Qaddafy’s works, Assad’s works, so many Muslim despots’ works (no doubt the explosions will come to the Gulf, too, and even to Riyadh and Jiddah) — and be struck dumb at the destruction.
