Lord Ahmed: Former peer guilty of child sex offences

A former Labour peer has been found guilty of sexual offences against two children in the 1970s.

Lord Ahmed of Rotherham was convicted of a serious sexual assault against a boy and the attempted rape of a young girl.

Sheffield Crown Court heard the repeated sexual abuse happened in Rotherham when he was a teenager. The 64-year-old, who appeared under his real name of Nazir Ahmed, had denied the charges.

Judge Mr Justice Lavender will decide later when Lord Ahmed will be sentenced.

Lord Ahmed was charged along with his two older brothers, Mohammed Farouq, 71, and Mohammed Tariq, 65, but both were deemed unfit to stand trial. Both had faced charges of indecent assault against the same boy abused by Lord Ahmed. Though the men did not face a criminal trial, jurors concluded that they did commit the alleged acts after hearing evidence in the case.

Lord Ahmed, who was convicted following a retrial, resigned from the House of Lords in November 2020 after a conduct committee report concluded he had sexually and emotionally exploited a vulnerable woman who sought his help.

The report made him the first peer to be recommended for expulsion but he resigned before this could be implemented. He still uses the name Lord Nazir Ahmed to tweet on such subjects as “Proud to be the longest serving muslim member in the UK Parliament.“, Kashmir and persecution of Muslims. 

Rosemary Ainslie, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s special crime division, said: ” . . . One of these defendants held a position of power, influence and responsibility for some time in the House of Lords but this case clearly illustrates that where there is sufficient evidence, even in challenging cases, the CPS will bring a prosecution, put evidence before a jury and see rightful convictions.” Although they don’t do this often enough. 

Ahmed, who received his peerage for ‘services to fish and chips’ (honestly – his family ran a chain of fish shops in Yorkshire) is, and I have first hand experience but the Official Secrets Act forbids me to say more, a serial complainer and professional whiner. But I had no idea then that he is also a child molester and sex pervert. 

Back in November : Opening the prosecution case, Mr Little told the court: “This is about repeated sexual abuse that took place in Rotherham over a number of years.”

He said: “Those involved kept it buried away for many years. It is no longer buried away and no longer kept quiet as they have complained. This was not a single incident. It was not isolated and it was not innocent sexual experimentation by children. It was abuse, repeated abuse, plain and simple.“

The prosecutor said the woman complainant ”had the courage to go to the police to make a complaint against a standing member of the House of Lords“.

Mr Little said Mr Ahmed told police it seemed there was ”an agenda behind the complaints“ and he was concerned that if he responded to the allegations this would be ”manipulated“. Always an agenda. If it wasn’t Judges doing him or his cronies down, or Civil Servants, it was the Jews who were responsible .. .
