An Australian is among three men who were stabbed during a suspected terror attack in the Maldives.
The attack took place on Tuesday night in Hullumale, according to Maldives Police Service, who said they are investigating the “act of violence perpetrated by suspected extremists”.
The two other men stabbed in the attack are of Chinese nationality. One of the Chinese nationals was a tourist and the two others worked in the city. All three were taken to hospital by members of the public and continue to receive treatment.
A video is circulating online of the attack on the 44-year-old, which was confirmed on Thursday by Maldives police. Videos are circulating of an apparent stabbing victim in a bloodied shirt being driven by scooter to hospital. The Australian is reportedly in a stable condition.
Three people have been arrested as a result of the attack. A Maldivian radical group affiliated with Islamic State had taken responsibility for the attack in a video posted online, local media reported on Wednesday. One of the three masked men seen in the video accused the Maldivian government of being run by infidels and warned more such attacks were coming.
