Man who wanted to ‘kill as many nurses as possible’ with hospital bomb jailed for 37 years

From the Manchester Evening News

A man has been jailed for a minimum of 37 years after bringing a home-made bomb into a hospital in Leeds, West Yorkshire, with the intention to “kill as many nurses as possible”.

Mohammad Farooq, 29, took a viable pressure cooker bomb, modelled on those detonated at the 2013 Boston Marathon except with double the amount of explosives, into St James’ Hospital in January 2023.

Farooq planned to detonate the bomb in the maternity unit of the Leeds hospital, but “lost his bottle” after talking to patient Nathan Newby, who was outside having a cigarette at the time.

Back in July last year, Sheffield Crown Court heard Farooq had immersed himself in an “extremist Islamic ideology” and went to the hospital to “seek his own martyrdom” through a “murderous terrorist attack”.
Sheffield Crown Court heard how Farooq, now 29, targeted the hospital as his “Plan B” after first travelling to the American base at RAF Menwith Hill, in North Yorkshire, but failing to get in due to the high security.

An investigation found he had become self-radicalised through accessing extremist material online, and had obtained bomb-making instructions in a magazine published by Al Qaeda to encourage lone wolf terrorist attacks against the West.

Movements of Farooq’s mobile phone and car showed he made at least two visits to the area of Menwith Hill in the 10 days leading up to his arrest, jurors were told.

Mrs Cheema-Grubb jailed him for life today, Friday March 21, ordering him to serve at least 37 years before he is considered for release.
