Whenever I think of some of the journeys that I made and countries through which I passed earlier in my life that could not be made or passed through now other than by someone suicidally reckless, I feel a certain melancholy. Surely the downfall of communism (almost but not quite complete) was supposed to usher in a new world order, an era of peaceful co-operation and mutual advantage? more>>>

I certainly do not “despise them a little” looking back, nor as TD i think, points out do I assume technlogy makes me “sophisticated”, having access to apps etc. does not make one an oracle. When will someone address, in a serious manner, how far we should go, afterall, I believe that it will soon be possible for a man to carry a child.
I certainly do not “despise them a little” looking back. Mr. Dalrymple avoids discussing how far we can go with technology. Will it not soon be possible for a man to carry a child? I think these concrns are what lires behind his acquaitances refusal too “embrace” technology, although this may be covered uo with ” I missed out on it”.

As a child I loved historical atlases. It was fascinating to see the shifting tides of peoples, nations and empires. I quite distinctly recall musing over the exotic names of faraway Balkan cities: Ljubljana, Zagreb, Sarajevo…
Little did I ever imagine that one day I would visit them all several times over, first in a blue beret and then wearing NATO insignia.
