In the Netherlands, a member of Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party, Willie Dille, has just committed suicide. She had been an MP, and recently had been a member of the city council in The Hague.
Willie made a last video, expressing her sorrow to her family, and explaining what led to her decision. She said that on March 15, 2017, a group of Muslims had kidnapped, repeatedly raped, and abused her. When they were done, they asked her: “Do you respect Muhammad? Do you respect Allah?” She claimed that they had been ordered to rape her by a former member of Wilders’ Party, one Arnoud van Doorn, who was Dille’s fellow member of the city council in The Hague, in order to frighten her into silence at meetings of the council.
Van Doorn is a bizarre figure. Once part of Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party, the party broke with Van Doorn in December 2011. In April 2012, Van Doorn announced his conversion to Islam. He expressed regret that he had been involved in making Wilders’ short film Fitna. Van Doorn is now head of the European Da’wa Foundation. He has thus become not just a Muslim, but one entirely committed to promoting the faith. He has been accused of antisemitic remarks, including one about a Jewish Canadian who paid a ransom to free Yazidi and Christian hostages, and about whom he tweeted “To sell at a profit?” Called out on it, Van Doorn claimed he had only been joking. Van Doorn has also described the failed coup in Turkey as the work of “Zionists.” On May 4, National Memorial Day in the Netherlands, when the more than 100,000 Dutch Jews murdered in the Holocaust were remembered, Van Doorn said that Palestinians were equal to the victims of the Holocaust. He has also tweeted “May Allah exterminate the Zionists.”
Willie Dille was afraid not just for herself, she said, though she found herself constantly thinking about the rape, but about the threats made against her children. There was a record of her having approached the police about the rape, more than once, but she never filed a formal complaint. Why didn’t she? She might have gotten cold feet, having been filled with fear for her children by the rapists’ threats. And children were central to her life in every way. She had four adopted children, and also owned a care institution for mentally disabled people and foster children. Any of her own children, or those in her care, might have become the targets of Muslims intent on revenge if she made a formal complaint.
What shall we make of this story? To me, It has the ring of horrific truth. Something had been deeply disturbing her since mid-March 2017, which led to a noticeable loss of weight, that can be seen when we compare the online photos of her before March 2017, plump and smiling, with the haggard haunted woman she became. Something was destroying her from within.
Now the police will investigate. Did she tell anyone else, other than the police, in the last 17 months, about the rape? Did she leave contemporaneous notes, or a diary? Did family members, friends, the other members of the city council, notice any change in her behavior after March 15, 2017? Did she continue to speak out against Islam, or did she became much more circumspect, after March 15, 2017? How did she behave in the presence of Van Doorn? Did she behave differently toward him from how she had behaved before March 15, 2017? Did she seem to other council members to be frightened of him? And was there any change in his attitude towards her? These are all questions the police should be asking, as they try to establish what led to this terrible and tragic end.
And if they find her story is true — as I fear it is — then she will have been one more victim of Islam, along with Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh, in what was once the easygoing, tolerant, lighthearted Netherlands, where Islamic menace is now in the air.
