Undergrads at Amherst College post signs calling for suspension of free speech; you never know who may say something hurtful. Probably-well-fed students at Oberlin are hurt that the college food service is weak in serving up authentic ethnic food; after heart-rending protests, reforms are promised. more>>>

“What happens at Duke would matter greatly if this were a very small country—if we were Sweden, for instance, and Duke were Uppsala, from which an extraordinary number of the cultural, political, and economic leaders of our small country graduate. But since we are a very large country with an extraordinarily large college population, what goes on at Good Old State University is a hell of a lot more important than what goes on at Stanford.”
I certainly disagree. What happens at Stanford (and HYP) is important because an extraordinary number of the cultural, political, and economic leaders of our small country graduate from such elite institutions. In the main, GOSU grads are not going to run the country. Also, the HYP grads are going to become professors at GOSU and teach the non-elite kids, so what happens at HYP has second-order effects on GOSU.
A wonderful essay. TYhank you for revealing the sordid underbelly of the university for us.
The only way to preserve the idea of the university now may be perhaps to set up new colleges based upon the old system of teaching humanities and sciences.
