Just a few days after I moved to this country in January 1970, I watched — uncomprehendingly — Super Bowl IV.
A new world, for sure. Play stopped every few seconds. Coaches were in control of every detail. Players wore space suits. And then there were those vexing Roman numerals. Why not Super Bowl 4?
Now at Super Bowl LIX it all looks eternal. I can almost hear Julius Caesar in the stands yelling at a line judge, “Are you blind?”

How are you on American football now, Reg? My Grandma came to the US speaking only German, but became an avid baseball fan (Chicago Cubs) and she passed her love onto three generations now.
I can see how American football seems opaque to those across the pond, what with constant meetings (huddles), clock stoppages for various and sundry reasons, many penalties, and replay stoppages to look in minute detail what just happened.
We who grew up with can only smile and shake our heads. BTW, typical American, I find “football” i.e. soccer a bore. No score after 90 minutes and then deciding a game by kicks? Spare me!
