The most recent eruption of articles about the British royal family — with the echoes that come with them of former pettiness, backbiting and greed — reminded me of a story in a world so long gone that it might be from fairyland. In Hons and Rebels* Jessica Mitford who in 1936, aged 9, and having just discovered how babies are made, breathlessly passed the information on to her incredulous sisters. “And — even the King and Queen do it,” she added.
