Ouch! Shush! Can’t You See I’m Reading?

By Reg Green

The election over, the loud-spoken on both sides are preaching conciliation and practising truculence, leaving the rest of us, who are  only too ready to come to a commonsense agreement on taxes and energy regulation and boys’ bathrooms, begging for an armistice, like the one that ended World War 1 106 years ago today. Perhaps we should try what Sir Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s, said was the most effective way anyone had ever disrupted one of his fiery speeches, when a group of students at Oxford sitting on the front row calmly opened their newspapers when he started and read them till he’d finished.
