A man is shot in the back because of a grievance over money that he is connected to in only the most tenuous way by a good-looking killer who is quite intelligent. The opinion columns linking an individual to the shooting are filled with justifications.
As Anatole France (1844 to 1924) the writer who epitomized European skepticism in the 19th century said, “Man is a rational animal. He can think up a reason for anything he wants to believe.”
