The New and Living Way
Christianity as it has come down to us, reveres and cherishes the divine Jesus, Son of God, but on this day of his birth, we should also remember his inspiring and valiant life as the Son of Man. Through his life as he lived it, Jesus demonstrated how man may come to know God and by doing his will, may gradually become more and more like him – from mortality to immortality, from human fallibility to divine perfection. Jesus was the most religious man who has ever lived, He lived the perfect life. And he believes in us so profoundly that he expects us to follow him on this journey. If he did not believe we could succeed, he would not have shown us the way.
Let us also remember, he did not expect us to imitate his life in every particular. He wrote nothing down, he left no list of rules or regulations of life. Rather, his spirit is born in each man’s heart anew and each life lived for his sake is original and adapted for its time. As the aged Apostle John once said, “My children, love one another.” That is the heart and soul of Jesus’ teaching.
