A Phoenix man was indicted for allegedly conspiring with two gunmen who opened fire on a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest in Garland, Texas, last month, federal authorities said.
Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem, 43, helped plan the May 3 attack with Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, who were shot and killed by police at the suburban Dallas scene, according to court documents obtained by the Arizona Republic and 12 News.
Kareem, who runs a carpet-cleaning business, supplied the gunmen with the assault rifles they used in the siege and practiced shooting with them in the desert, prosecutors charged.
Kareem opened his home up to the hopeful killers to discuss a plot as early as Jan. 7, when two terrorists stormed the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris, prosecutors said. Yet contest organizers did not announce the event until Feb. 11.
The court documents do not detail where Kareem was during the ordeal or his motive, although ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack that left a security guard injured within days.
