Tortured by Circumstance

I once had a patient who claimed to have been a torturer in the Syrian army. Unfortunately for him, he failed to give satisfaction in this capacity or otherwise fell out with his employers, and found himself in receipt of the attentions that he had not long before given to others. I suppose this is not an uncommon trajectory among torturers.  more>>>

  2. 1. No one has ever argued that any end justifies any means.  Of course, some ends justify some means.  It depends.  This is not a serious question.
    2. On the subject of political correctness, I'd say that having one's career and life's prospects destroyed for holding an opinion contrary to the ideology of the ruling elite is a great deal worse than having to pay a fine.  It's easy to assume that all notions that our own time is in some respects uniquely bad proceed from a wanting sense of history, but there is no a priori reason why that must be true.
    3. Seeking out danger and difficulty for their own sake is foolish, just as giving up what is really valuable to avoid them is cowardly.  This is one of those cases where the golden mean is really a completely sufficient prescription.
