I remember posing the question of allowing our enemies to fight each other to a speaker years ago, not long after we went into Iraq. The man was horrified: “What about the oil?” he asked. “We take it,” I answered. “Is this a war or isn’t it? I’d rather see us defending an oil field and a port, than trying to keep Iraq together at such tremendous cost.” The room was hushed and the crowd seemed to turn on me – Americans want to fight nice wars, they seemed to say. That was then. This is candidate Trump today.
