Seventy-one percent of Americans in a recent NBC News poll said the country is headed in the wrong direction. No doubt much of this feeling is fuelled by objective factors such as the decline in US influence in the world and the polarized political scene. As the nation’s average age creeps up, however, I wonder how much of what’s making us so glum is what Yossarian’s superior officer in Catch 22 said of him: “You have a morbid aversion to dying.”

The aversion is to our leadership, period.
But don’t you think those leaders are a reflection of us, the people, who chose them?
